I’m Kuromame

Hello, everyone. I’m Kuromame.

When my previous owner moved, I was sent to grandma’s place temporarily. When grandma tried to touch me, but I was not ready yet and … I bit her hand. After that, I was kept outside. It was January and very cold. I was frozen…. Then, I was brought to a place called ARK.

At ARK I see so many young ladies and many dogs. I was timid at first but I started to like it here. I could eat a lot and I got lots of nice rubs and scratches.

One family decided to adopt me but then their situation changed. I lost the chance…. Everyone at ARK said, “Kuromame is a lovely Chihuahua and must be adopted soon.” But no offers have come yet. It is because of me. They say I am selfish.

I love being held, walking and getting rubbed. But my favorite thing above all is “eating”. If someone puts their hand in front of me when I am eating, I will eat the hand too!

Also, if a hand reaches toward me when I am in a bad mood… I will bite.
That is why people say I am “selfish” or “rebellious”, but they also call me a “typical Chihuahua”.

I did not know that biting was a bad thing. Nobody told me that when I was a puppy. When I do bite it is only a small hole or a little bleeding… can you forgive me?

If you welcome me to your family, please be patient with me until I find my toilet place. I know what pet sheets are, but it takes time for me to understand where the new toilet is located.

I like sleeping in a pet crate and never bark at guests. I can get along with other dogs or cats. I can call myself an “easy to take care of” dog. No? I really am a spoiled Chihuahua.

I’m looking forward to seeing you, my new mom and dad.… (snoring…)

ARK Reunion 2013☆

We had our ARK Reunion Party2013 at Sasayama, our future sanctuary site on May 19th.

The day before the event the weather forecast said “rain may start from 6pm.” Unfortunately, it turned out to be rain starting at noon. We saw some sunshine in the morning and tried not to believe that it would rain. We started the event as planned.
A few families cancelled, but 145 two-legged and 87 four-legged friends attended.

We tried to proceed as fast as possible. There was a short speech, a group photo and games were planned after lunch. Then the rain started… If it were just a light rain we could do all the games but actually it was a pretty heavy rain. Many of the participants gave up and left, but still many people/dogs patiently stuck it out.

These cards were “self-introduction” cards about each dog. They got wet but we dried them. The staff members enjoyed seeing the dogs they used to care for.

The Yes/No Quiz could be done with umbrellas. And seeing that the dogs didn’t care about the rain, we decided to do the “Come! Come!” race as well.

”Okay honey, you should run to your mommy!”

Do you understand the game, Kosuzu chan?
You have to touch your human daddy. Waiting in front of the goal line does not count…

One fun part of the reunion is when dog siblings meet up again. Well, the owners seemed more excited than the dogs. They kept saying, “I knew you guys looked alike!”

We are always impressed to see how the dogs have changed. Adopted dogs look calm and confident. Even the dogs that were big barkers at ARK never had any trouble at the event. Probably they were confident since they had their own family now.
We don’t always have dogs that are easy to take care of. But the adopters accepted each dog as it was and loved them. We have no words to express our appreciation to the adopters. The animals are all so lucky.

Seeing happily adopted ARK dogs made all the staff members happy.
Please join the next reunion if you missed it this time around!
Thank you so much to the people came to join and to the volunteers and staff members. We did not have great weather but still it was a lot of fun.
See you again next year!

Ingot, the gold block

Hello all!
My name is "Ingot"
My name has an interesting origin...

Look, this is me when I arrived at ARK.
I was skinny but not due to a diet.
I was abandoned in the mountains and did not eat for several days… I was starving…
I was wandering with fear and walking in the middle of the road. That’s when Ms.Oliver from ARK passed by.

When she saw me walking on the yellow center line of the street she thought she found “Ingot=a gold block”.

“Do I look like… a gold block..?”

Thanks to ARK’s staff, I could gain weight and my profile was uploaded on the adoption page. Also, I was taken to an “adoption event” at GREEDOG Kobe.

Up until the morning of the event, I had been afraid of human hands. I thought people would hit me with hands… But people were so nice to me and I found human hands were not that bad. I was also afraid to take food from human hands. But seeing other dogs eat some treats from people’s hands, I could eat some from the guest’s hand.

The event was full of first-times for me.
I was nervous but not too afraid. Many people called me “cute” and I felt the warmth of caring people. ARK staff members said “it was good to bring you here.” They saw me change a lot in a day.

I will introduce my buddies who joined the event with me.

This is Miss Uno.
Miss Uno is young and beautiful.
She was so popular and was held by many people.
But she followed the ARK staff member who takes care of her all the time and fell asleep by her side. Such a cute puppy.

This is Mr.Cadbury.
He is sociable and welcomed all the guests.
I have to learn some traits from him...
I call him a “sales manager”, secretly of course..

And Mr.Ushio. He was in the blog before.
Look at his beautiful smile! I cannot believe he is already 14 years old.
He did not like other dogs before, but I cannot tell at all now. The staff members said, “Now other old dog control him”.
Ushio’s fan came from far place just to see him.
What a popular guy, Mr.Ushio!

This is today’s cat, Mr.Cappuccino. He was also in the blog article.
I’ve heard adult cat tends to be nervous in a new environment. He was frozen like this with these pointed ears the entire time. The staff wanted to show his friendly character to the guests….maybe next time.

The staff told me it was not that busy compared to usual events. Was it due to the weather or because it was a Saturday? Anyways, it was perfect for me, a beginner at the event.
I hope my ARK friends will find forever homes soon. Oh, yes, and for me too.

And what is this round thing? Mr. Ushio and Miss Uno were fighting over this thing… I have no idea..

Adoption event report☆at MAGATAMA on 29th Apr.(Mon)

MAGATAMA is a café in Tamatsukuri, Osaka. They supported ARK before by holding a panel exhibit. This time, they kindly held an adoption event for us.
Good smells filled in the air at the café. How will dogs react in this place?

Five dogs joined this time but no cats.
First up is Nove who was rescued from an animal hoarder.

This innocent face is a trick? All the girls like him!
He is like a baby because he falls asleep just after being held.
He did not care even when he was in the center of the place. He slept peacefully.

One family brought the questionnaire filled out for Nove. They will contact us again after they discuss keeping him in the house.
The girl from that family held him and he liked it. We hope they will be the one for him☆

Tre was rescued from the same animal hoarder as Nove.

Tre is beautiful and gentle. She was also popular♪
She is curious but timid when somebody puts their hands towards her. On this day, she could walk well in a busy city and was calm when held. She will be able to get used to a new life with a new family quickly.

Tre became more friendly after the adoption event.
Did you learn something from the event?

Here’s an energetic girl, Punkie Anna.

She is big but still a puppy. When she gets excited….we often scream “nooooooo!!” But when her switch turns off and she sleeps…. she is like an angel☆

She barked at herself in the mirror and was held like a koala… She is still an adorable puppy♪

We did not have any offer for her, but we hope she will be adopted during her puppy age!
And she could do her business on a pet sheet☆

From a team small-doggies, first up is Maltese Ange.

Ange barks like a king in his kennel at ARK. But he asked to be held during the event as he was overwhelmed by the crowd.
The most reliable person for Ange that day was…Ms. Oliver.
Ms. Oliver loves big dogs and is rarely seen holding a small dog! This is a rare shot☆

He was like this throughout the event…and no offer.
He seems unfriendly but is a spoiled boy. Let’s hope he finds someone who understands his character!

And last her is Chihuahua Kuromame. Joining an event was already a challenge for him.

He is 7 years old and has a cute face. But no offer so far…..
Is it because of the profile description “When I am in a bad mood, I bite.”???
For him, we prepared special clothes with a note written on it.
“My mood swings and sometimes I bite. When I come to you, please rub me gently. (Please do not touch me when “being held”, “eating” or “sleeping (spending my own time)”.

One guest tried to read the notes closely from above and was snapped at. Despite that, he was calmer than usual. Probably he got tired due to the number of guests.
And people in the city love Chihuahuas. Some said, “No worries, Chihuahuas usually bite.” Thank you for the kind words. We now see him like a city Chihuahua☆

With the former ARK dog, spoiled Chihuahua Akubi-chan.

And Kuromame got an adoption offer!
The adopter has a dog and he is undergoing medical treatment now. After he recovers completely, Kuromame will join the family.
We realized that small dogs are loved by families in town.

It was the first adoption event at MAGATAMA but very successful.
Thank you so much MAGATAMA for letting us use half of the café!
And thank you to the volunteers who were too busy to have a break. We also appreciate all the guests came that day!

MAGATAMA is also kindly having an ARK Charity promotion event.
Please stop by MAGATAMA. The food there is also recommended!

With volunteers and artists.
