Mr. White, Mashiro

A pure white cat named “Mashiro (meaning pure white in Japanese)” came to ARK in April last year. He is about 6 years old.

An ARK supporter saw Mashiro on the street but thought he belonged to someone because he had a collar. One day she noticed a scar on his back. Maybe from a cigarette burn? She worried he might be getting abused on the streets. He was so friendly to everyone and easily approachable. She asked ARK to help rescue him.

Many cats that used to live on the street are good at adjusting to a new environment. Mashiro was too and he seemed happy after he arrived at ARK. He enjoyed being held.

The day after his arrival he was complaining that he was hungry!

After being taken in by ARK, animals are spayed/neutered and vaccinated. Then there is a discussion as to where the cat should live. Mashiro was put in a small room where two Main Coons lived. Mashiro adjusted quickly to the new room and was friendly with his roommates. His friendliness was often compared to a dog’s and we expected him to be adopted right away.

Soon after, one of the roommates was adopted. Mashiro and the other Main Coon were moved to a bigger room with more cats. Being with so many cats might have caused him stress. He started bothering other cats. Considering the stress to the other cats, we decided to put Mashiro into another room.
In the new room, he was bullied by senior cats…. Finally, Mashiro ended up living alone.

“Staying in a room alone is not that bad”

His current room is small and is not very private. He can see other cats in front of his enclosure and he can see dogs being shampooed. It seems he doesn’t care and he sleeps all day.

But sleeping all day is not good for Mashiro. He needs exercise and some fun. Staff members tried walking him with a harness. Usually when a cat has a harness put on for the first time they freeze. It takes a cat a long time to get used to walking with a harness. But Mashiro never cared. He walked around in front of the dogs in the bath. Nothing bothered him.

“Let’s go for a walk today too!”

“What’s for dinner tonight?”

“Everything is yummy”

“I wanna eat this one too”

Mashiro loves food! ….

But but, he loves people too!
He loves to be spoiled like this♪

Adult cats are calm and easy to take care of compared to kittens. But most of them are sensitive to environmental changes. Some people are worried when they see the cat acting differently for several days after being rehomed. We are sure Mashiro will eat just fine after being rehomed!
He uses a litter box so you don’t have to worry about him too much.

Wouldn’t you love to have a cat with such a good character by your side???

Adoption event report☆at GREENDOG on the 10th of Feb. (Sun)

We usually hold an event in even-numbered months at GEORGE Osaka. But this time, we were at Kobe GREENDOG. Due to the date/place change, we also changed the participants at the last minute. So how was the event?

First, our featured cat, Fleaur
As reported in a blog article, Fleaur is good at adjusting to a new environment.
She ate all her meal just after we arrived at the event. She slept well in her cage, was rubbed by guests and came out from her bed in the afternoon for another meal. “Meow (I’m hungry)”!
Staff members were all impressed by her…
Sleeping so well with half opened eyes!…

No offer for cat adoptions this time. But now we can easily imagine how she can adjust to a new life. We can recommend her to anybody♪
“Feeling good and full♪”

Beagle Maybe really enjoyed being outside the shelter.
She came to ARK just 10 days ago, but already was assigned to the event!
She loves people and loves playing with other dogs. She kept running around during the event.
”She was abandoned when she was 7 months old.” “We heard she was so skinny back then…” We told sad stories about her, but it was hard to imagine her sad past given how happy she looked running around the event.
She is just one year old and never gets tired. Astro was the only one who could play with her, but even he gave up in the end. Finally, Maybe had to play with a dog bed, angrily…
“Wake up, bed! Fight me back!”

Oh, one good thing we discovered is that she used the toilet sheet 3 times during the event. She was praised and made no mistakes!

Instead of Grizzly who was originally planned to join the event, Astro was signed up for the event at the last minute.
He climbed up on a volunteer to get more attention.

Astro is always good at training puppies.
He never got mad at Maybe even though she was persistent and they’d just met for the first time. He played with Maybe patiently and looked more handsome than usual☆

Astro licked a baby’s face. Yes, he loves people too!
He is getting older and getting calmer. We hope to find him a forever family to live with soon.
Astro was a good boy and waited to go outside for his toilet business.

Okowa was walking around looking for treats and was almost stepped on by Maybe.
Okowa is not young any more, but never took a nap and did some “self-promotion” to get some treats.

She was also held by a child who was overwhelmed by Maybe. “Okowa is much cuter,” she said!
But actually, Okowa is not good at being held. She just froze!

She was so hyper at the event that she slept all the day next day.

And from the recent featured Team -Dachs, Prism and RedKing joined.
We are Power Rangers! Blue & Red!

We were surprised to see that Red King was more curious than Prism. While Red King was walking around, Prism was in the corner and never moved.
But when we pick him up to pass him to the guests… Prism was the most popular one and he was held calmly.
We are expecting one family to come to Nose to meet him again.
Looking forward to seeing them again♪

And adorable droopy eyed Red King was also held by many people and called cute many times.
Red King is going to become an addition to a family who came to the ARK shelter the next day.
We will love him as much as possible until his new family comes to pick him up♪

A couple of former ARK dogs visited the event. We were so happy to see Squib’s change.
Squib was more timid than Prism and Red King. He has learned so much in the two weeks since he was adopted. Now he can be held by anyone.
Having his own family changed him a lot.
It was a great chance for the visitors who came to see Prism and Red King to see how much a dog can change once adopted.
Playing with a staff member…

Andromeda who was never shy to other dogs and Garollet who is shy around dogs.
Both were adopted by GREENDOG’s staff. We are so happy to see them at the events♪

It was a successful day.
Thank you so much to everyone for coming and to the volunteers! Also we appreciate GREENDOG who kindly accepted the sudden change about the event!!!

The next adoption event will be on 24th Mar (Sun).
It will be called “Inu zukushi no hi (Full of doggies day)” in Southern Mall Rokko where GREENDOG is located. Please come stop by!

On Feb. 24th (Sun) Adoption event at DOGSIGN in Jingumae, Tokyo☆

“THE” Dachshunds

Of the 18 Dachshunds we featured in ARK news, 13 of them left to be with their new families. Thank you for spreading the word and tweeting the news.

In this team, the older dogs are the friendliest and the younger dogs tend to be shy. Probably the older ones had more chances socialize with their owner than the younger ones.
Duff is super friendly but super skinny as well. He is now with a foster family in Tokyo and is putting on some weight.
But it may take time to get to his ideal weight.

At the adoption event in Tokyo: Amazing that you can sleep in a place where you’ve never been, Duff…

Four of them are a bit shy. They are in Osaka and are still looking for their new families.
But two of the really shy ones, Baloo and Squib , were adopted. Maybe their funny faces attracted people? They got many offers for adoption.

Today, we will show you a little bit more about the remaining Dachshunds!

Prism is the friendliest one. He is good at making friends with people. He shows his joy to the people he knows by moving his whole body♪
Once he becomes hyper, he pulls our clothes to say “play with me!” or “Touch me!”. The staff members instantly fell in love with him!
Prism’s special trick☆

Red King is the second friendliest one.
He is a little bit cautious at first and it takes some time to get trust from him. But once he knows you well, he will come to you to get spoiled♪ It is always wonderful when a shy dog opens his heart to you.
Adorable droopy eyes☆

Next is Tristram.
He is called the most handsome one and is very quiet.
If another dog goes to get attention, he follows and quietly asks, “rub me”.
When the staff members arrive in the morning he gets really excited
“I want to get spoiled, but I am not good at expressing it.”

Caraway is the only female left and the shiest one.
Other female Dachs were adopted quickly, but Caraway had no offer…
And now, she is alone…
Female dogs tend to be strong and adapt themselves to shelter life easily. But it seems to be taking a little bit of time for Caraway. She usually doesn’t approach people on her own but she will follow other dogs. It might be good for her to have a family with a friendly dog. In the morning she is excited to see the staff. She even licks the staff member’s face
These days she can even ask someone to “hold me” but she won’t do it to everyone.
She is changing. We are expecting her good to open up more with more socialization.
“I’m still shy, but I love to be held, actually.”

They rely on each other and all sleep together like this.
From the front, Prism, Red King and Tristram.

”Could you please leave us alone? It’s family time!”

We are hoping Caraway will be adopted together with friendly Prism, and that Tristram and Red King get a home together. That would be wonderful!
All of them can get along well with other dogs. We can recommend them to the family who already has a dog. A friendly dog in the home would help them adapt to their new life.

When they came to ARK they were cautious during walks. Now they love to go for walks. We assume they experienced many “first times” since coming here. All of them are quiet, use pet sheets and are not aggressive in anyway. They are smart and very sweet. They just need a loving home. All of our staff members really adore them. We are keeping our fingers crossed that they will get their forever homes soon!
