I wonder what life is like in a house with three cats and a nurse for a father!

Getting through it all with a smile!

egao1.jpg

It’s been a long time since I’ve updated this blog.

A number of staff members recently quit in succession, so my days have been extremely busy. My head has been filled with how to do my daily work without all the other helping hands. I can’t even take pictures for this blog or think of things to write about.

egao2.jpg

Being short of help is a chronic problem here, and things have gotten even busier. Everybody is just snowed under with work.

What are we going to do…
But at a time like this we have to just keep calm.

egao3.jpg

In the end, the animals are the ones who are subject to the conveniences and inconveniences of humans. It’s really hard to deal with this.

So at times like these, we put a smile on our faces and spend time with the animals. We must protect them.

egao4.jpg
I must not forget why I am working at ARK. We must be united together in our cause!

We’re trying to get through any hardships with a smile!

Sassy☆Rehomed!!

sasi-1.jpg
Wait a minute, what’s going on in here? Sassy, why are you getting a shampoo??

Yes! Everyone’s wishes came true. For Sassy too, the long-awaited day has finally come!! Since playmate Sessy got rehomed, it was a lonely life for Sassy day after day, but finally, the outcome we’ve all been waiting for is here.

When the adopter met Sassy face-to-face, Sassy realized during her walk that something was different, and actually got a little shaky. But the adopter was very understanding with Sassy, and decided to keep her. (However, I noticed that even though Sassy was trembling and had a rather hard expression, she didn’t miss a beat in gobbling up the treats I gave her.)

sasi-2.jpg

Sassy doesn’t know what’s going on here, and she looks a bit discombobulated. And of course, she’s not going to like being put into the kennel that the adopter has prepared in the car. But we’re sending her off with smiles, because we know that a peaceful, happy, wonderful life is waiting for her.

When they were ready to head off, the adopter said a few words. “Don’t worry. I’ll take good care of her.”
Truly, truly, thank you for choosing Sassy!!

Congratulations to you, Sassy.
At last...at last.

Char is waiting too.

tya-1.jpg

I’d like to introduce you to Char.
Becky, the girl on the TV show “Shimura Zoo”, was involved in rescuing him and his brother, Harry. Harry has already been rehomed, but Char is still waiting to find a new home.

When Char first came to us, he was very wary and anxious. But he’s become really used to the people and the environment at ARK now.

tya-2.jpg

When people used to approach him he was very timid, but gradually he began to bark happily and jump up at people. He soon understood not to bark so much and not to jump, but he resisted being hugged or showing his back for petting. Now he comes and snuggles up to us.

If we stop stroking him he stretches his legs out farther as if to say “stroke me more!”

tya-3.jpg

He really likes to be brushed. He’s made a lot of progress because he is happy to be stroked and rubbed now. This is probably because we have been giving him a lot of baths, so he has gotten used to being touched.

Char has sensitive skin that gets easily irritated, and he gets what seems like rashes (eczema). We think that it may be because he used to live indoors but now he’s staying in our outdoor enclosures, or maybe because of all the excitement surrounding him at ARK. This can cause a dog a lot of stress. He has some Border Collie blood in him, so he gets easily excited, which could be causing this problem as well.

tya-4.jpg

Just like humans, stress in dogs can cause health problems.
I think that once he is able to live indoors again with a loving family, the stress should go away and his skin condition should get better.

Although Char is very cute, when we show him to prospective families he barks through the fence and doesn’t give a very good first impression. He’s a very sensitive dog, so even when we’re just taking him for a walk, he acts a bit puzzled when put into a different situation like this.

Char can’t help that he feels uneasy when he’s always being put into different situations and asked to meet new people. He feels like that person has suddenly invaded his space. Not all dogs immediately put on a happy face and wag their tails upon meeting someone new. That’s what we need prospective families to understand. We also need them to understand that it will take time to build a bond with a dog. Changing environments is difficult even for people who can communicate with each other, so it is even harder for a dog who can’t communicate with humans.

tya-5.jpg

You just have to be patient until Char opens up to you. Being able to wait is one part of love. If you can do so, he will definitely thank you and make you happy.

Foul, on Kuronya!

This is “Kuronya”. He seems cold at first, but once you start playing with him, he plays like crazy! Yes, he is so CAT.

At first, he didn’t seem to have any problems, and he was moved to a cage where several cats live together. Then he developed hair-loss for no apparent reason. It didn’t seem like other cats were bullying him, and we didn’t feel that he was under stress. But cats in general are vulnerable to stress from a changing environment. Kuronya may internalize his stress.

kuronya2.jpg

We moved him to a “single-cage” area in our office.

This is a single-cage area for cats who can’t get along with other cats, or those who can’t be put in a cage with other cats because of illness or restrictions on their food. One of these cages is Kuronya’s current home.

kuronya3.jpg

Even here, there is so much stress for cats. There are dogs around, barking, and people coming in and out. The area is always busy. Of course, many cats got used to this, but poor Kuronya didn’t show much improvement. His hair-loss hasn’t resolved itself so far.

kuryonya4.jpg

But Kuronya loves people. If someone calls him, he snuggles up and purrs. I feel a little sorry for him because the single cages are narrow and there’s not enough space for him to run freely. I feel sad seeing Kuronya going crazy in a small cage. I wish he could have his own family and get his own space. If he is adopted, I bet his hair-loss problem will disappear completely. It is common for cats to recover from hair-loss once they move to a settled environment.

When Kuronya feels playful, he grabs an arm and gets it on the ground, then kicks repeatedly with his rear feet! Kick! Kick!!
And then…

kuryonya5.jpg

Ouch!!!!!!
Don’t bite!
That’s a foul!!
He is still young (we guess about 4 years old). Please be Kuronya’s family and enjoy his bite-attack! You would love this cute character.
